Building
a home philosophy library
Lyn
May and Steve Deery
The
second in a series of articles advising on how to build your own
home philosophy library.

2 Douglas Hofstadter and Daniel Dennett (eds.) The Mind's I
This
anthology centres on the theme of consciousness. Lest we be charged
with having a one tracked mind - and that's between two of us -
the choice of The Minds I has much to commend it. The strength
of an anthology is in offering the reader a diverse range of perspectives
on a given topic. Using classic articles, short stories and dialogues
the reader is introduced to some of the central problems associated
with consciousness. The range of authors and issues is wide; everything
from Alan Turing's discussion of artificial intelligence to Richard
Dawkins' account of the evolution and survival of ideas. The imaginative
and memorable qualities of the articles encourage discussion. And
if you can't find anybody who is likewise enthused by the ideas
there is a reflections section at the end of each article, so you
can go it alone. This really is a philosophical chocolate box with
some hard nuts and soft centres.
