Notes for Contributors

Thank you for your interest in submitting articles to TPM.

The following notes are not rules set in stone, but they do give you an idea of what we need to help you decide how or if to proceed.

  • Please do not send unsolicited manuscripts as these cannot be read. In the first instance, send an outline of what it is you wish to write, or have already written.

  • Always look at the articles we have already published to get an idea of the kind of article we might use.

  • Almost all our contributors are academics or people with a high level of academic training. This does not reflect any elitism, merely the high standards we set.

  • Most articles in our essay section are 1,700 words long. These tend to be: advocacy articles, arguing that a certain philosopher, school or issue has been neglected; articles which make connections between surprising aspects of philosophy or philosophy and other issues; articles which clear up a common misconception; or humorous pieces which reveal philosophy in unexpected places. What we rarely publish are substantive, new philosophical arguments. Academic journals are the best place for the detailed, substantive stuff. We are more concerned with the dissemination of interesting arguments than development of new ones.

  • Our features section contains 1,700 word articles about aspects of philosophy and philosophers, rather than philosophical arguments. These could be, biographical, historical, factual, reportage etc.

  • Articles for our single-issue forums are usually solicited from acknowledged experts in particular fields.
  • We are always open to suggestions, but I must stress again, please send in proposals, not full articles. Please do not hesitate to contact us if, having read these notes, you are still interested in contributing, and thank you for your interest in our magazine.
